8 Best Electric Lawn Mowers Under $500

For whichever reason you’re in the market for a cordless electric mower under $500, you’ve come to the right place.

Rather than running on gas, electric mowers are powered by a rechargeable battery. This ends up saving trips to the gas station and money in the long run. However, most people have issues with electric-powered mowers because some run out of battery too often or aren’t strong enough.

However, after extensive research and reviews, we formulated a list of 8 mowers under $500 that provides a dependable battery life with immense power. Each of the eight mowers below is able to reliably mow your yard without issues!

In Short, Here Are The Best Affordable Electric Lawn Mowers Under $500 (All Cordless)

  • Worx WG743 40V
  • Greenworks G-MAX 40V
  • Sun Joe iON16LM Cordless
  • Greenworks GLM801601 21-Inch 80V
  • Snapper XD 82V MAX
  • WORX WG751 40V
  • Powerworks XB 40V
  • Greenworks 40V 20-Inch Cordless

1. Worx WG743 40V

First up, the Worx WG743 is an excellent electric lawn running well below $500. Providing dual 20V batteries, it offers 40 volts of total power. Another beneficial feature is the six different cutting height positions it offers. Most mowers don’t give you that many height positions. With a 1.1-bushel grass capacity, Intellicut torque on demand, and a 5,500-foot runtime, this mower is an awesome choice!

Users Say: “Love it. Very lightweight, mows well and shreds leaves well too. I have an average size front and back yard, and I can mow both twice without having to re-charge the batteries. I was concerned that it wasn’t self propelled since my back yard has a slope, but it really wasn’t an issue because the mower is so light. The weight is more similar to a vacuum cleaner than a mower. Wish I had replaced my gas mower sooner.”

2. Greenworks G-MAX 40V

Running well below $500, the Greenworks G-MAX electric mower is an exceptional choice. Coming with the purchase, you get the rechargeable 4Ah battery and the charger. It offers five different cutting height positions so you can get the cut you desire. With a full charge, it gives you a full hour of battery life which is enough for most yards. It has a 17-inch deck size, a convenient push-button to start it up, and it provides a total of 40 volts. Another beneficial feature is its foldable design allowing it to compactly fit in small spaces!

Users Say: “This lightweight mower is easy maneuver in the tight areas around my new blueberry bushes and ferns and can handle the wet grass after an early morning rain. I was able to mow the front, side, and both levels of the back yard with one charge. As you can see from the two full cans of cuttings the grass was pretty tall before I got started. The front yard was mowed at level 2, 1 being the shortest, and the back and side was mowed at level 5, 7 being the highest. Its an amazing little mower. Beats the heck out of the Black and Decker I had with the extremely heavy battery.”

3. Sun Joe iON16LM Cordless

Amazingly, the Sun Joe iON16LM recently had a significant 36% reduction in price. Although we’re unsure if this discount is permanent or temporary, we believe it’s either way, a fantastic bang for the buck. It offers 40 volts of power, 6 different cutting height positions, and a 15-inch cutting width. Unfortunately, the battery doesn’t last long enough to cut most yard sizes. Most people either purchase an additional battery or cut their yard in two separate days.

Users Say: “This mower is pretty sweet. It’s light and maneuverable. Can easily be picked up by the handle. Battery lasts a long time. It’s quiet. It does feel a little bit cheap though, the wheels seem pretty wimpy and the back doesn’t sit quite right. Concerned about durability. Hopefully it holds up because it’s pretty expensive. For now it’s serving my needs though.”

4. Greenworks GLM801601 21-Inch 80V

For good reasons, the Greenworks GLM801601 is one of the most popular and highest-rated electric lawn mower on the market. Not only is it running under $500, but it’s also on a hefty 15% price cut. You get a 4Ah battery and its charger with the purchase. Along with its convenient push start button, you’ll enjoy the long 45-minute battery life. This mower has a wide deck size of 21 inches.

One of its most unique attributes is its Smartcut Technology. This feature, essentially, speeds up the cutting blade automatically when it detects more power is needed. You’ll also be very impressed by its quiet operation. Overall, it’s one of our highest recommended electric mowers on the market!

Users Say: “We have a half acre lot in Florida! Home of the toughest, MEANEST grass in the US. My husband was using a REEL mower because he hates the noise and maintenance for gas equipment. He could not finish mowing the lawn in a day and I could hear he was out there fighting away. From the stranger “harvester” noise reel mowers make. This mower is revolutionary. Not only can he do our whole yard and edge (we bought the trimmer too) in 45 minutes, he does it with one battery and I don’t even know he’s out there mowing because it’s so quiet. I can be outside and not know he’s on the other side of the lawn mowing. It’s a game changer! Yard looks great.”

5. Snapper XD 82V MAX

The Snapper XD is a reliable electric mower under $500. There are a plethora of reasons why we love it. For one, you’re able to compactly store it with its vertical folding capabilities. You’ll also appreciate its 7 different cutting height positions, push start feature, 19-inch deck, and 82-volt lithium-ion 2.0Ah battery. Along with the purchase, it comes with a rapid charger and the battery, as well. Be sure to check out the reviews below!

Users Say: “For some reason, I expected this mower to be self-propelled. It isn’t. That’s the only thing my spouse dislikes about it, as that was his requirement in a mower since we live in a hilly area. I like it. It’s easy to maintain thus far, after one year of use, and the batteries last for a little more than half of our quarter acre yard per battery. We throw one on the charger and when the battery exhausts, the other spouse will come in with the new battery and take over mowing, helping to ensure we both get a chance to mow. Gas mowers scare me a bit and it’s nice to not have to have as much highly flammable material in our garage.”

6. WORX WG751 40V

Next up, the WORX WG751 is a competitively priced electric push mower under $500. It’s a 3-in-1 design with its capabilities to bag, side-discharge, and mulch. Both of the 20V batteries that come with the purchase provide 40 volts of power total. With the steel cutting deck, it has excellent build quality.

A very important feature this mower offers is its patented intellicut which adds torque when needed and helps conserve the battery when it’s necessary. You’ll also appreciate its lightweight. Overall, it’s a dependable option and we primarily recommend it for smaller yards!

Users Say: “For me, it’s a 5. I’m a 62 year old woman. My husband is allergic to grass so I’m the mower. It’s lightweight and easy to start. But there are some spots I have to go over twice. But I don’t mind. I wanted a mower that did not require oil and gas. But, if I’m being honest, my father would not of liked this mower. He lacked patience going over some spots twice. For me, it’s perfect.”

Included with the purchase, you get a 4Ah battery and charger. You’ll also appreciate its resistance against rust. Be sure to check out the reviews below!

Users Say: For such a tiny machine, this mower packs a punch. Its assembly is minimal at most and took me less than 5 minutes to get it up and running. Its small size, and foldable arms, allows it to fit where most mowers can’t, such as in a narrow walkway between a house and a fence, or in the backseat of a car if it needs to be taken somewhere. As well, the absence of fuel and oil makes it cleaner to transport as well. Also, the battery, when fully charged, can power the mower for a while. On the first full charge, I used the mower for over 45 minutes without depleting the battery. The size, ease of use, and versatility make this a great mower to have.

8. Greenworks 40V 20-Inch Cordless

Last but not least, the Greenworks is a fabulous electric mower under $500. It’s also currently on a humble 5% discount. You get a charger and two batteries with the purchase. One battery is 4Ah and the other is 2Ah. With a 1-hour run time, it’s able to entirely cut most yard sizes in one session. With a 20-inch cutting diameter, Smart Cut Technology for convenience, and 40 Volts of power, it’s a great choice.

Users Say: “This is a very powerful, lightweight, and quiet mower. It handles very well and even though it is a push mower without built-in drive, it is easier to deal with than a heavy gas mower that is self-propelled. If you get a second battery, you can easily mow for 90 minutes or more. Our lawn takes about 40 minutes, so we don’t even go through one fully charged battery. It takes about 2-3 hours to charge the battery, so you need to be a bit organized and pre-charge them (or, rather, charge them right after you’re done mowing). You can adjust the hight very easily with a large lever, allowing you to cut the grass at different lengths as needed. All in all, just as effective as the gas ones, but much more quiet and environmentally friendly.”
