The Neumann TLM 102 is way too good for its price range. The incredibly clear and natural sound this microphone produces can stand toe to toe with some of the most expensive microphones on the market. As we all know, the audio of a voice or instrument captured does not entirely rely on the microphone itself. Pre-amps and compression play a big part in the overall sound as well. However, our research conducted on finding the very best professional-grade microphone for the lowest price factored in different pre-amps as well. Although every interface produced a slightly different sound, the Neumann TLM 102 still performed incredibly on each one.

The Neumann TLM 102 is a cardioid condenser microphone that is smaller than most Neumann’s with a diameter at 52mm and a length of 116mm. However, don’t let its small size fool you; this microphone produces an immense sound that can be compared to microphones twice to three times the price.

You probably wouldn’t think the TLM 102 at its compact size has a large diaphragm, but it does! The benefits of a mic with a large-diaphragm are always a plus for vocal recordings. It can capture more of the acoustic energy than a smaller diaphragm mic. Another great advantage for the TLM 102’s large-diaphragm is its extremely low self-noise of only 12dB.  

The TLM 102 is an incredibly versatile microphone that can be used for recording just about any instrument. However, it truly excels with vocals. Its ability to handle extreme SPLs mixed with the low-noise circuitry makes the TLM 102 capable of capturing the voice naturally with incredible clarity. Not to forget, the wide dynamic range of 132dB is quite exceptional as well.

The cardioid polar pattern for the TLM 102 is very tight. The off-axis rejection is incredible, which gives the mic more attention to what’s right in front of it while reducing unwanted background noise. Once held in your hand, you will be able to tell right away how fantastic the all-metal build quality and durability of the mic is. It was clearly well designed that was built to last. Not to mention, the TLM 102 itself is absolutely beautiful. Possibly one of the better-looking microphones I have seen, thus, adding production value to your studio.

The Incredible Sound Quality Of The Neumann TLM 102

Neumann….. the “Porsche” of microphones.

While you get what you pay for in most markets of music gear, I beg to differ in the realm of microphones. One of the first lessons I’ve learned in the audio recording world is “more expensive, doesn’t necessarily mean better.” While I’m not saying a $200 microphone can compare with a $1500…In the case of the TLM 102, I am actually saying this $700 mic really does compare with a multitude of the $1000-$2000 mics.

The Neumann TLM 102 produces phenomenal sound quality precisely optimized for voices of any type. It sounds incredibly smooth and accurate for vocals and most instrument types. While carrying the full frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz with a slight boost in the highs after the 7kHz, the vocal clarity is unbelievable for the price.

The low-end sounds full and rounded out, which adds a bit more authority to the voice. In the meantime, the minor boost at the 6kHz is in the “airy, breathy” frequencies add incredible presence. However, while many microphones upper-frequency boost may sound a bit harsh, have no fear with the TLM 102. It has the perfect amount of treble boost that is in no way unpleasant to the ears.

As you can see in the frequency response graph above, the minor upper 7k boost in the airy frequencies begins to dropoff around 15k. In my experience, most of my favorite microphones have this boost in the “airy, breathy” frequencies. What I like about the Neumann TLM 102 is the 7K boost adds incredible presence while the 15K frequency cut eradicates any of the harsh frequencies. Mix that with an incredibly smooth, full, and round sound that is able to withstand extremely high SPL’s with its large diaphragm, the TLM 102 is a steal for the price.
